Hauser & Wirth: Home of visionary artistic projects
In the 1980s, Ursula Hauser, co-founder and director of a family retail business in Switzerland, developed an interest in contemporary art and began acquiring modern masters, which turned into a true passion. In 1992, the art collector, her son-in-law Iwan Wirth and her daughter Manuela founded Hauser & Wirth, a gallery based in Zurich. “The niche for us was artists who were making more complicated work, work that needed support, that was highly important but not commercially successful. A lot of the artists we take on don’t have a market — our job is to build it.” The gallery, which represented 93 artists or their estates in 2021, engages with art, education, conservation and sustainability.
